About

I have always believed every place has a story.

Some are written in old oaks and shifting light. Others lie beneath compacted soil, forgotten garden beds, or the quiet persistence of life waiting for the chance to return. My work begins by listening for those stories before ever putting pen to paper.

I don’t believe a landscape should be imposed upon the land. I believe it should emerge from it.

The most meaningful gardens are not monuments to their designer. They feel inevitable, as though they have always belonged exactly where they are. They invite people to wander, to notice, to be curious. They soften hard edges, blur lines, and reconnect people to their surroundings. They hold the changing seasons with grace and beauty. Over time, they become woven into the lives of the people who care for them.

Landscape design is stewardship. It is a collaboration between ecology, architecture, and each life that a place will one day support. Every decision is an opportunity to cultivate beauty, resilience, and belonging.

That philosophy shapes every project at L. Fern Designs, whether I’m creating a quiet corner for morning coffee, restoring habitat for pollinators, or reimagining an entire estate. My hope is always the same: that years from now, the landscape feels less like something installed and more like something that simply found its way home.

Because I believe the most enduring landscapes don’t ask us to stand apart from nature.

They remind us that we have always belonged to it.
